Sepsis and Intensive Care

Sepsis is a serious disorder in which the body overreacts against an infection. A body with normal functions specifically targets the infection site when responding to an infection. In sepsis, however, immune system initiates a chain reaction for fighting against the infection. The response of body does not localize in infection site, and leads to formation of symptoms affecting whole body. This situation is also called as systemic response. As a result of this systemic response, generally, fever, abnormally rapid heartbeat, and over-breathing are observed in patients with sepsis. In some patients, response to infection may become uncontrollable in such way that it deteriorates body balance and harms one or more vital organs. This systemic response is more dangerous than the infection itself. Medical approach for sepsis patients is very important. Follow-up and treatment of such patients should absolutely be carried out in the Intensive Care Unit.
